Two lift standards have been reissued

News

Two important European lift standards have been revised: EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 (February 2020 issue).

EN 81-20 (Passenger and goods passenger lifts) and EN 81-50 (Design rules, calculations, examinations and tests of lift components) have now been reissued to implement the requirements of the European Commission in EU mandate M/549. N.B.: No technical changes were made.

The other modifications involve the requirements of the mandate:
- The standards mentioned in the paper have been redated, which among other things directly affects product licensing and technical documentation
- There is a new Annex ZA referring to Lift Directive 2014/33/EU and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and their respective relevance for the main occupational health and safety requirements.

The old standards will have a transitional period of 24 months; harmonisation under the Lift Directive 2014/33/EU is pending.
