VoIP technology for lift emergency calls
SL6 VoIP is the latest member of Safeline’s SL6 product family. It combines the familiar SL6+ with the state-of-the-art IP technology. As a result, interruption-free communication and smooth handling both during installation and in daily operation are possible, according to the manufacturer.
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. This technology permits the replacement of existing telephone technology and its associated components.
Although this technology is already in wide use in many areas of everyday life, it remains rare in lift emergency calling. According to Safeline, this is above all due to the lack of high quality products specially designed and built for the requirements that exist in operation as safety equipment for lifts.
The new SL6 VoIP now realises the IP communication via a completely digital end-to-end solution from device to the alarm control centre – all without conventional analogue protocols. If the existing alarm control centre does not yet support VoIP, Safeline’s infrastructure can convert the signal into a protocol that the control centre can process. In this way, customers should be able to use all the advantages of VoIP without having to change their alarm control centre.
 Future-proof technology
According to the emergency call manufacturer, this has several advantages for users:
 • VoIP is on the one hand very future-proof. This is because it is based on standardised technology and protocols. As a result, it has a long service life and is completely compatible with future communication solutions.
 • In addition, it improves the audio quality in emergency calling. Disruptions in communication, background noise or loss of sound quality are things of the past since the signals are no longer subject to the compression of mobile communications providers for voice calls. "Similar to the switch in radio transmissions from VHF to DAB, the result is improved audio quality and more stable transmission," explained Johan Öhrn, product manager at Safeline.
 • The secret is that VoIP uses the fast wide band data channel of the mobile communications network.
 • A further additional benefit of the service is that it can be configured from any location. Moreover, it provides a complete overview of the system status in Safeline's "Orion" cloud. This saved time and avoided unnecessary on-site visits, the manufacturer pointed out. "Naturally, regular function checks and inspection of the operating status are also possible in the cloud."
 • In the event of malfunctions or interrupted connections, the emergency call centre is notified immediately.
 • Due to the much cheaper M2M-SIM cards (without voice transmission) and the elimination of an additional gateway or system converter, the maintenance costs are lower than in the case of the traditional emergency call communication.
 • However, when choosing an emergency call provider, an important factor is not just the costs but also the security of the calls. This is achieved by encrypted communication to protect calls and data via the SL6 VoIP. According to the company, Safeline provides ready-to-use SIM cards and access codes.
API integration – control of your own systems
The company states that the Safeline cloud possesses an open API interface for fast, easy integration in the operator’s own system, without an elaborate and costly additional cloud.
"You can automate work processes, improve reaction times and work more efficiently with the API solution without having to log in to several systems," Safeline emphasised.
