The EN 1570 series is expanding
EN 1570-1, Safety requirements for lifting tables – Part 1: Lifting tables serving up to two fixed landings has already been available since 1998. It has undergone continuous further development over the course of time.
A major revision of the standard occurred in the 2024 edition. It is currently being adapted to the new Machinery Directive.
By Dieter Unger
The 2012 version introduced lifting categories with different load factors, depending on the lifting table's mode of use/application and the differentiation of the protective installations required, depending on the design of the lifting table. In addition, the requirements for preventing people from falling off the platform were altered. The 2015 version involved reformulations that could lead to misinterpretations on the market.
A major revision of the standard occurred in the 2024 edition. The document was fundamentally restructured.
In addition, the following lifting tables were also included:
- lifting tables in non-industrial applications
- static lifting platforms;
- lifting tables used in push plate systems or autonomous ground vehicles,
- lifting tables that can pass a fixed landing and transport authorised persons;
Further revision

EN 1570-2, Safety requirements for lifting tables – Part 2: Lifting tables serving more than 2 fixed landings of a building, for lifting goods with a vertical speed not exceeding 0.15 m/s, has only existed since 2016.
The current revision involves restructuring the document to conform with EN 1570-1:2024, the introduction of measurement and structural loads and a new Annex D – Control devices and the corresponding pictograms, to mention just a few changes. The final survey is planned for the beginning of 2026.
The EN 1570 series has been expanded with a Part 3: Safety requirements for lifting tables – Part 3: Lifting tables for raising operators, serving more than 2 fixed landings of a building with a vertical speed not exceeding 0.15 m/s. Since the work has only just begun, publication can only be expected in a few years. In principle, this part ought to resemble Parts 1 and 2.
DIN in charge of TC secretariat and working group
A special feature of this series is the location of the work. For example, EN 1570-1 is being handled in CEN/TC 98 – Lifting equipment in Working Group (WG) 2. DIN is in charge of both the TC secretariat as well as of the working group.
By contrast, work on EN 1570-2 and the new EN 1570-3 is occurring at the CEN/TC 10/WG 12. DIN is also in charge of the secretariat of this working group while the secretariat of CEN/TC 10 "Lifts, escalators and moving walks" is under the French standardisation organisation AFNOR. There are historical reasons for this division, which was determined before the creation of EN 1570-2. The reason is that the risk of falling in EN 1570-2 is the same as for lifts.
There is no division in the discussion of these standards in the VDMA manufacturer group. All of these standards are supervised in a technical committee in the specialist department cranes and lifting equipment of the Material Handling and Intralogistics Association Great interest exists in the production of EN 1570-3 since to date manufacturers have rejected projects involving the risks of Part 3 or had to carry out a risk assessment for their products.
The fundamental safety requirements for this product will now be determined with the creation of this standard, which will simplify distribution.
