The elevator as a new ally for building energy efficiency

News

In today’s sustainable construction paradigm, a new player is quietly gaining
relevance: the elevator.

Until recently, the
energy impact of vertical mobility was a blind spot in many efficiency strategies, according to the full-lift manufacturer Orona: "That is changing. And we are
 leading this transformation from within."

Orona says that an elevator can account for between two and ten percent of a building’s total electricity consumption. "That may seem marginal—until it’s multiplied by thousands of buildings, hundreds of daily journeys, and years of use. The real breakthrough lies in understanding that this impact is manageable, measurable, and reducible."

According to the company, the following is possible:
• Up to 40 per cent energy savings with gearless traction.
• Energy recovery on every descent, feeding power back into the building’s grid.
• Up to 70 per cent savings in modernization projects.
• Cabins with LED lighting, recyclable materials, and smart standby modes.

The Orona Next range—particularly its Flex solution for refurbishment—has been designed under eco-design principles and "responds to Europe’s growing demand for modernization of the existing lift stock".

A Holistic Approach:
Beyond the Product

Orona offers a full-service solution that integrates design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance, enabling energy impact control at every stage of the elevator’s life cycle:

• Individual design based on usage type, traffic flow, and building profile.
• European manufacturing under ISO 14006 standards and with Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).
• Installation aligned with construction workflows, even in industrialized building environments.
• Predictive maintenance based on real usage data, optimizing resources and extending service life.

Orona says: "This model delivers technical value, competitiveness, traceability and efficiency for developers and property operators in key sectors such as offices, hotels, residential facilities and public buildings".

Sustainability as a
growth driver

According to the company Orona’s commitment to sustainability is driving its growth and ambitions. In 2024, the company, which employs over 6,400 people, exceeded €1.1 billion in revenue, marking a ten per cent increase on the previous year, with an EBITDA of €168 million.
