A new lift that adapts automatically
The international lift builder Schindler unveiled a new product at the Milan Design Week. The “X8” can be installed in any part of a building and operated with conventional household electricity, the company reported.
The new Schindler X8 holds out the prospect of new standards in room design and in the architectural layout of a building. According to the company press release, the lift adapts to the project – and not vice versa.
A concrete shaft was superfluous. A shaft pit and headroom are likewise unnecessary. The lift could be "installed in any part of a building with environmentally friendly building materials."
The Schindler X8 needed only a single cutout in the wall. The innovative dry-wall construction and integrated doors facilitated completion of the floors, ceilings and walls even before the lift reaches the building site. The product can be installed in new buildings or retrofitted in existing ones. Only limited disruptions or structural measures were needed.
Technical details

The car doors are 800 or 900 mm (only in the 630 kg version) wide and 2,000 or 2,100 high. They have two panels and open centrally. The new Schindler lift travels at a speed of 1 m/s and can serve up to ten stops in a building. The lift can only be entered from one side. The shaft pit should be at least 1,500 mm. The landing height is a maximum of 3,200 mm. Powered by standard current
Unlike normal lifts, this Schindler model only requires standard current, like any other domestic appliance. This plug-and-play approach was intended to enhance the system's versatility and was especially suitable for installation in existing buildings, according to Schindler.
Six interiors are available (Forest, Luna, Mineral, Savanna, Terra and Volcano), which can be supplemented with mirrors. The traditional buttons have been replaced in the "X8" by Schindler’s Uniarrow – this is a control panel with wave symbols, which the company says permits intuitive operation.
"New levels of simplicity"
