Vodafone announces specific dates for 2G shutdown

News

Important news for all operators whose lifts are equipped with a 2G-based emergency call system: Following in the footsteps of Telekom, Vodafone has also decided when it will switch off its 2G network in Germany.

Vodafone has finalised its plans for the switch-off of the almost 40-year-old mobile communications technology ‘Global System for Mobile Communications’ (GSM/2G). The company will deactivate 2G services for private and business customers in September 2028, Vodafone announced in a press release. However, it will remain open until the end of 2030 for particularly critical applications of the Internet of Things (IoT). The aim is to ensure a smooth transition to new technologies such as CAT-M, NB-IoT or the upcoming IoT technology 5G RedCap. The frequencies used for 2G will be used for the LTE and 5G networks, including to improve coverage in rural areas.

Vodafone customers who still use older mobile phones or sensors will need to switch to more modern devices. ‘We are ensuring a seamless transition from 2G to modern networks – both for mobile phones and for the Internet of Things,’ explains Tanja Richter, Chief Technology Officer at Vodafone Germany.
