Information campaign about the 2G switch-off in Norway

News

The Norwegian mobile communications operator Telenor and Telia have together launched the “ByttNettNå” campaign. They want to inform lift operators and other parties affected in this way of the 2G network switch-off.

"Telia will begin to switch off its 2G network in August 2025. Telenor has decided to begin its switch-off on 31.12.2027," declared Telenor in a press release.

As part of the joint initiative "ByttNettNå", they want to inform private persons, companies, municipalities, organisations and subcontractors of the impending transition to technologies like 4G, 5G and optical fibre. A website would answer the most important questions on the switch-off of the 2G network and its consequences.

Provided as part of a package

According to the press release, there were a multitude of devices and solutions not offered by Telia and Telenor and which most people did not immediately associate with mobile communications networks, such as emergency call systems in lifts. A common feature to several of these solutions was that they were provided as part of a package and were often fitted with foreign SIM cards.

"If both Telia as well as Telenor switch off the 2G network, these and other services will no longer work with 2G," declared Morten Karlsen Sørby, CEO of Telia Norway.
