The innovative solutions from Aleatec magically attracted the interest of Merck KGaA. In intensive discussions with the two managing directors of Aleatec GmbH, Marianna Liebert and Markus Stucke, it quickly became clear that there was enormous potential for saving energy in the international group's buildings in Germany!

Lift shafts with their legally required openings for ventilation and smoke extraction are indispensable – but they are also energy guzzlers! Particularly in the cold season, they allow valuable heat to escape and drive up heating costs. While modern buildings have long relied on smart systems for the controlled ventilation of lift shafts, existing buildings can rely on the protection of existing buildings and do not need to be retrofitted. Retrofitting not only protects the environment, but also saves money.

Florian Hammann and Sascha Burkhardt, the lift experts at Merck, wanted to find out for sure. They decided not only to discuss the promised savings in theory, but to prove them scientifically.

The lift shaft of a group of two in a laboratory building on the premises of Merck KGaA was selected for the measurements. The eight-storey laboratory and office building with a gross floor area of around 15,600 m² was the ideal candidate.

The lift shaft there, previously without a controlled ventilation system, allows valuable heating energy to escape unused due to its permanent opening (chimney effect) - perfect for testing the effectiveness of the enev-kit, which closes this opening and only opens it in the event of fire or ventilation!

On 3 May 2024, the time had come: Aleatec arrived with the measuring devices and installed an anemometer (TSI VelociCalc 5725) at the smoke extraction opening of the lift shaft. This high-tech device measures the volume flow and the temperature of the escaping air. An additional temperature logger (DK320) also precisely records the outside temperature. 

The experts used this data to calculate the energy loss caused by the open shaft opening. To be on the safe side, the results were forwarded to the engineering office for energy consulting (Ingenieurplanung Söllner GmbH, Wendlingen) for validation.

Her are the measuring results

Ø Volume flow: 3,151.9 m³/h
Ø internal temperature: 19.80°C
Ø outside temperature: 12.39 °C
Ø Power loss: 7.92 kW (at 12.39 °C outside temperature)
Annual average power loss: 10.15 kW (at 10.6 °C average annual outdoor temperature in Darmstadt)
Annual energy loss: approx. 80,000 to 90,000 kWh

The results of the measurements show that retrofitting an enev-kit from Aleatec is a sensible investment in the future. With Aleatec's innovative solutions, the energy efficiency of buildings can be significantly improved and energy costs considerably reduced.

Conclusion Conclusion The measurements prove the high savings potential by retrofitting the smart smoke extraction system with ventilation of lift shafts – the enev-kit. Assuming heating energy savings of up to 80,000 kWh per year, Merck KGaA could save annual net heating costs of around EUR 5,600 in this lift shaft alone (at 0.07 cents / kWh). In addition, CO₂ emissions could be reduced by up to 15 tonnes per year.
